Gay Persons More Vulnerable to New Contagious Bacteria

It has been affirmed by a UCSF-led study that the sexually active gay men happen to be many times more likely than others for the sake of obtaining a innovative, highly antibiotic-resistant strain of the so-called MRSA bacteria, which is known in the broader aspect as the "superbug". According to the study, the bacteria is found to appear to be transmitted in the most easy manner through the means of an intimate sexual contact, but has the enough potential to spread even through casual skin-to-skin contact or contact with unhygienic surfaces. The presence of this saga has made the scientists, in general, to be concerned of its gaining ground among the common people, at the earliest. To them, this new-fangled notion of the strain of bacteria, to be very precise, has a close relation to the MRSA bacteria that is learnt to have spread, in the recent years even out beyond the domain of medical institutions and resulted in the mergence of severe skin and other infections. But the recently discovered microbe is, in addition, resistive to many more front-line antibiotics.

Speaking on this Dr. Binh Diep, UCSF postdoctoral scientist at San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center and also the lead author of a report on the finding said, "These multi-drug resistant infections often affect gay men at body sites in which skin-to-skin contact occurs during sexual activities. But because the bacteria can be spread by more casual contact, we are also very concerned about a potential spread of this strain into the general population."
